There’s some seriously depressing news today for Grey’s Anatomy fans. Dr. Cristina Yang will be leaving the Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital after this coming season.
Sandra Oh has released a statement confirming that, yes, season ten will be her final one before hanging up the lab coat for good.
An emotional Oh spoke to The Hollywood Reporter today, stating:
"Creatively, I really feel like I gave it my all, and I feel ready to let her go…It’s such an interesting thing to play a character for so long and to actually get the sense that she wants to be let go as well. [Cristina] wants to be let go, and I am ready to let her go. We have to start the process, story-wise, for the Grey’s writers to think of why she’s going to go.”
The actress tearfully explained that this had been a long time coming, but that the decision was not an easy one to make. Her first thoughts of leaving came at the end of the show’s eighth season, when the “original six” cast members all signed on for another two seasons.
Of the finality of her departure from the hit series, Oh said the following: "I’ve gone through a lot of therapy over this. I started thinking about it because I had to prepare myself. I gave myself two years to emotionally let go. At the end of last season, Shonda took me aside and said, ‘What are your thoughts?’ I said, ‘I’m ready.’"
Make no mistake: Sandra Oh is not completely done with Grey’s Anatomy. She still plans on sitting down every Thursday night at 9 PM to watch her soon-to-be-ex co-stars. And of the possibility of returning for the series finale, Oh says there’s “no way” anyone could keep her from that.
The rest of the cast of Grey’s heard the news yesterday at their table read for the show’s 200th episode.
At the moment there’s no word as to whether any other cast members whose contracts expire after ten seasons will follow in Oh’s footsteps. Sources have told THR that negotiations for further seasons will get underway relatively soon.
As for what we can expect from our last season with Cristina Yang, Oh said the following:
"I want this to be a celebration. I want us to get to that point where we see this character ride off into the sunset. Letting go of such a huge part of my life … I want to cry right now. Grey’s has been the most important role of my life. Playing Cristina and growing her and growing myself in her, I want to usher her into the next section of her life in the best way possible. It’s got to be Cristina Yang’s happily ever after.”
