Sarah Jessica Parker Invites You To Walk In And Also Smell Her Shoes

Having played shoeaholic Carrie Bradshaw through six seasons and two movies of Sex and the City, Sarah Jessica Parker knows a little about shoes. So it should come as no surprise that she’s teamed up with the one and only Manolo Blahnik to release her own bag and shoe collection. Though the collection is not being released until 2014 (and images are still embargoed), a small number of the press were invited to an intimate preview on Thursday night and Fashionista.com has shared what they learnt.

This is obviously a project close to SJP’s heart as she went to great lengths to share with all in attendance her enthusiasm for the products. She also shared what she looks for in a good shoe… it’s the smell.

That’s right, Sarah Jessica Parker invited people to smell her shoes. Explaining this odd quirk, Manolo’s President and SJP’s business partner, George Malkemus said, “She loves the smell of shoes”. SJP elaborated: “You know that makes a difference, when a shoe isn’t well-made, it doesn’t smell good. Not that it really matters… but all those details really add up.” We might just to have to take your word for that.

Along with the perfect smell, her new collection has a sense of nostalgia to it. In describing what she wanted, SJP reflected that, “I really wanted to bring back the single sole. I wanted to go back in time and be the 11-year-old that was looking in the window at Charles Jourdan and Maud Frizon and recall those great, gorgeous colors and the way people made shoes without thinking about anyone else, just doing what excites them.”

Not only are there a lot of single sole shoes in her collection, but each shoe has incorporated grosgrain into the design. SJP wanted her shoes to be unique and stand out from the crowd. Thinking back on when she was little and her mother made her wear grosgrain ribbons in her hair every day, she asked Malkemus if it was possible to include grosgrain in her shoes. The answer was obviously yes as each shoe has a little grosgrain tab or seam at its back.

SJP was also involved in the naming of each of the shoes and all you Sex and the City fans will be pleased to know that you will be able to get your hands on a “Carrie”. For those of you wondering, it’s a pointy-toe t-strap pump. SJP even advised on how to wear it; have the ankle strap sit lower down the ankle so “it doesn’t chop your leg in half.”

So how much of our “hard-earned bucks” can we expect to fork over for a pair of these? Surprisingly, not as much as you would think. Each item in the line comes in at under $500; the “gateway shoe” (a suede flip flop) will cost around $150 through to $400 for a pair of pumps.

The SJP collection will hit Nordstrom stores in January 2014.
