When it was announced that NBC was eyeing a sequel series to the Cruel Intentions film, many wondered if we would be fortunate enough to receive any characters from the original 1999 cult-classic. On Friday, Deadline initially reported that we could see a familiar face after all, the iconic queen of Manhattan known as Kathryn Merteuil (played by the film’s MVP Sarah Michelle Gellar.) It has been stated that the producers of the series have approached Gellar to reprise her role for the series, but hasn’t committed and is currently reading the script.

The Cruel Intentions series has been picked up for a pilot at the least, and is set to be written and directed by Roger Kumble who was also behind the success of the film. While Cruel Intentions focused on the complex dynamics between step siblings Kathryn and Sebastian (Ryan Phillippe) , in addition to the naive Annette (Reese Witherspoon) and somewhat juvenile Cecile (Selma Blair), the series will pick up 15 years after the events that led to the death of Sebastian  and the public reveal of Kathryn’s addiction for drugs and chaos. The NBC adaptation of Cruel Intentions will focus on the son of the deceased Sebastian, and Annette Hargrove, with the pilot described as: 

it is set in present day and picks up more than 15 years after the movie left off. Kathryn Merteuil vies for control of Valmont International as well as the soul of Bash Casey, the son of her brother, the late Sebastian Valmont, and Annette Hargrove. Upon discovering his late father’s legacy in a hidden journal, Bash is introduced to a world of sex, money, power and corruption he never could have imagined.

If Sarah Michelle Gellar decides to return to the series, I would be interested to see what antics Kathryn could be up to years later – she may not be the nicest character, but you just can’t help but love her wicked ways. Are you getting excited for the new Cruel Intentions adaptation?
