It has just been announced that beloved Scottish author Iain Banks has died at age 59 from terminal gallbladder cancer.  The author’s family has made the difficult announcement two months after the author told the world he was suffering from the illness.

Iain Banks, who also published science fiction books under the pen name Iain M. Banks and wrote novels including The Crow Road and The Wasp Factory, had asked his long-term partner Adele Hartley to become his wife when he discovered he had less than a year to live. The couple married over Easter and honeymooned in Europe.

His final novel, The Quarry, will be released on June 20th and is a semi-autobiographical story of a man suffering from terminal cancer.  Banks announced his intention that this forthcoming novel would be his last in a blog post this past April.

Mr. Banks also thanked his fans for their support over the years;

 “I feel treasured,” he wrote in one post. “I feel loved, I feel I’ve done more than just pursue the craft I adore and make a living from it, and more than just fulfill the only real ambition I’ve ever had – of becoming a professional writer… I am deeply flattered and touched, and I can’t deny I’ve been made to feel very special indeed.”

His publisher, Little Brown Book Group, has paid tribute to the Scottish author saying he was “one of the country’s best-loved novelists.”

“Iain Banks’ ability to combine the most fertile of imaginations with his own highly distinctive brand of gothic humour made him unique,” it said.

Our thoughts go out to his family at this difficult time.
