Search For Leads In Star Wars Episode VII Hits London And Dublin

Earlier this month, the producers behind Star Wars Episode VII began a long and rigorous UK and Ireland-wide search for two key roles in the latest film in the sci-fi franchise. Keeping with the usual Star Wars modus operandi, Disney and Lucasfilm are hoping to find undiscovered talent to take on these roles. Having started the search in Bristol two weeks ago, the caravan arrived in London and Dublin this past weekend. As previous reported, the producers are looking for a 17-18-year-old “street smart and strong” orphan female named “Rachel”, who “is able to take care of herself using humor and guts to get by”. The other person they are seeking is a 19-23-year-old man to play Thomas - a “smart capable” young man who has “grown up without a father’s influence” and therefore “doesn’t have the strongest sense of himself”. He is also “handsome” and “athletic". The open auditions were held in Twickenham Stadium (London) and Croke Park (Dublin) with thousands turning up hoping to land one of the roles. The purpose of the open audition is “to find someone who might not have necessarily gone to drama school,” UK casting agent Kate Bone told the BBC. At present, the producers are focusing first on finding someone with “just the right look” and if they find that, they will then “see if there’s any talent there.” Bone continued, "We don't want to leave any stone unturned, we want to see what's out there. To find an unknown talent is very exciting." While the casting process is ongoing, director JJ Abrams, along with Lawrence Kasdan, is hard at work reworking the film’s script, originally penned by Little Miss Sunshine writer Michael Arndt, who left the project back in October. Star Wars Episode VII will be released on December 18, 2015.
