Say it ain’t so, Doctor! In an interview with the Telegraph, Peter Capaldi confirmed that season 10 could be his last in the iconic role as the space-time traveling alien known only as The Doctor. Capaldi stepped into the part after Matt Smith two years ago during the Christmas episode, The Time Of The Doctor. He confirmed that his contract for the show only extends through season ten but beyond that, the future for 12 is undecided. The actor spoke of his possible departure with deep love for the part and hope for his future beyond, saying:

This could be my final year – it’s terrifying. I love Doctor Who but it can be quite an insular world and I do want to do other things. There will come a time when this is over. But I knew that when I started. I was thinking about my regeneration scene from the outset. That’s my terrible melancholic nature. When you accept the job you know there’ll come a day, inevitably, when you’ll be saying goodbye.

This news comes right on the heels of Jenna Coleman’s emotional  departure as Clara. Whovians still have the upcoming Christmas special, airing on Christmas Day, and a tenth season to spend with Capaldi. The Christmas special will feature the return of fan-favorite River Song (Alex Kingston) in The Husbands Of River Song.

And although nothing is set in stone, it will be sad to see Peter go. Peter’s Doctor was a return to classic Who for many fans and he certainly put his own stamp on the part. So, Whovians, be sure to stock up on tissue because with each regeneration, the writers always know exactly how to rip out our hearts and Peter’s departure will be no different.
