Ellen Degeneres’ Oscar-nominee-filled group selfie has now provided more than award show humor and a twitter record, earning over three million dollars for select charities!
The 2014 Oscar host wanted to set a record with Meryl Streep in making it the most retweeted photo in Twitter’s history. Degeneres ushered in multiple celebrities, such as Jennifer Lawrence, Brad Pitt, Lupita Nyong’o, Bradley Cooper, Julia Roberts, and many more.
The photo gained more than three million retweets, breaking the record previously held by President Obama.
Samsung Electronics were the sponsors for the Academy Awards this year, so the infamous selfie was photographed on a Samsung phone, and with the extremely successful advertisements and publicity, Samsung decided to give back and released the following statement:
“In honor of this epic moment and of course, the incredible response of nearly 3 million retweets, we wanted to make a donation to Ellen’s charities of choice: St. Jude (Children’s Research Hospital) and the Humane Society (of the United States. Samsung will donate $1.5 million to each charity.”

That’s extremely admirable of the company; who would have thought that a photo at an award show would result in three million dollars distributed to charities?
Bravo Samsung!
