If the past three seasons are any indication, fans and curious viewers alike can all agree on the fact that Sherlock is not afraid of treading through darker waters. Sherlock has had its fair share of dark storytelling moments in the past, but it looks like season 4 will be going even darker. Amanda Abbington (who portrays good ol' Mary Watson) said, "It is really dark. It is the darkest Steven and Mark have written.” This comes as no surprise considering this season marks the return of fan-favorite villain Moriarty (Andrew Scott).
The cast and crew of Sherlock let loose some key details about the fourth season of the series at San Diego Comic-Con, including revealing three key names that had everyone racking their brain in order to figure out the mystery laid out before them. The names announced are Thatcher, Smith and Sherrinford. Fans are speculating that Sherrinford is the third Holmes brother who will finally be making his grand debut.
All Sherlock fans who believe this could be the last season can all breathe a huge sigh of relief, for Moffat has assured everyone that thi season, by no means, is the end. In fact, he believes there will be "further" seasons.
Moving on to the panel itself, the sudden appearance of Benedict Cumberbatch came as a pleasant surprise for everyone in attendance. To add to that bout of pleasant surprise was the screening of the next season's teaser, which begins with Moriarty asking, "Did you miss me?" The teaser trailer features a darker and more gritty of an atmosphere and a trembling Sherlock -- which, as I have gathered from the past, is never a good thing. John is seen standing before a hospital bed, the identity of whose in that bed was not revealed. My guess is it's either Mary or Sherlock.
