The decision that turned many teenage girls’ hearts into jelly: putting those five failed solo artists into a band, One Direction. When none of the singers progressed, they were presented with the chance to become a group and carry on in the competition, going on to place third. Whilst on the 1D Day webcast, Simon Cowell claimed that he is solely responsible for the formation of this incredibly successful British group. It was my idea [to put you guys together]," Cowell said. The singers didn’t seem to believe him, so Cowell added: "It was really weird… I just said, 'Why don't we put these guys into a group?' It took 10 minutes!" This British boy band have gone on to sell 10 million albums in the last three years, as well as their two completed tours, and sold out world tour which commences April next year. One Direction’s 1D Day was a 7 hour live stream that was streamed to more than 61 countries and included a segment to congratulate the cast of Doctor Who on their 50th anniversary. "1D Day is all about giving back to our amazing fans for supporting us for the past three years," Liam said in the official 1D Day press release. Cowell doesn’t get all the credit however; on Sunday’s Xtra Factor , current X Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger was asked who to thank for the boys formation, to which she replied, “ME!” Cowell dismissed this, saying, “No. It was me!” Well, whoever’s decision it ultimately was, One Direction and Directioners all over the world are eternally grateful.
