For many music listeners, the lead single off any album is the defining moment where they meet their new favorite band, or simply find a new band to avoid. So much rests on the song that bands choose to release as their introduction to the public, so it is of paramount importance that this song is chosen well; thankfully, for the impressive and instantly likeable Sir Cadian Rhythm, choosing to release their catchy and well produced song “Gwen Barkley in the 20th Century” was the best choice they could have made.
This smooth sounding band from Long Island, NY will gain many fans with their currently popular sound. A cross between Cold Play, Maroon 5, and perhaps even a bit of Paramore (with male vocals instead), Sir Cadian Rhythm knows how to make a song worth pressing repeat on.
The track itself doesn’t break any of the rules of the genre it plays within, and for very good reasons; they don’t need to. This Rock Fusion/Alternative sound is focused more on showcasing how tightly this band can play, and the professionalism and masterful production skills. The vocals are smooth, clear, and tell the songs story in a great way. The guitars dance with the bass the entire track, and no one oversteps their musical boundaries; add in the proper drums and non-overbearing mixing job on those drums, and you get a song that does not need anything more added.
The accompanying video for “Gwen Barkley in the 20th Century” is a video that could have fallen flat on its face if not for the extra attention to making sure that it didn’t. It is a safe piece with a lot of live footage, mixed with some semblance of a story, and given a true rock-polish. For a band that clearly has something unique to offer, I truly hope that for the next video outing that they fully indulge in their own artistic freedom. That being said, this video and song are friendly enough to guarantee a place on both the radio and internet channels, which means more exposure, and for a band that deserves to be heard by as many people as possible, that is a good thing.
