Sir Elton John has been in the industry for over 50 years and is definitely a successful musical icon with several awards and honors to show for, but what does the “Candle in the Wind” singer have to say about musical reality show competitions?
He isn’t a fan of the music television merge. According to the Guardian, the musical icon feels that shows like The Voice are all about the judges rather than the contestants.
He noted that “nobody on The Voice in America has had a hit record. Nobody on The Voice in England has had a hit record – they’re nonentities.” It sounds a bit harsh, but it’s somewhat true.
Between The Voice and The Voice UK there have been 6 total winners – 4 stateside and 2 across the pond. John seems to be voicing his opinion after not hearing much new work and hits from any of the past winners.
For example, past UK winner Leanne Mitchell and her debut album only reached 134 on the UK charts. Season one Voice winner Javier Colon’s album with Universal Records peaked at 134 in the US charts.
John goes on to say that that “they’ve propelled people into stardom that aren’t ready for it. And they’re only as good as the next song. I hate that, I hate people being cast aside. It breaks my heart to see people like Michelle McManus who won Pop Star, whatever it was, but it’s not fair.”
A lot of these winners are still very young, but once their season ends they get into the music industry. The shows continue to move on to find another star.
The most recent winners Andrea Begley (UK) and Danielle Bradbery (US) are still fresh in the minds of The Voice fans. Begley has her single “My Immortal” and Bradbery was signed to Big Machine Records.
Sir Elton John may be right about TV shows fast-tracking people to fame. Shows like The Voice help get people’s careers started and help create a fan base.
For viewers, however, it’s all about the entertainment and having the power to choose the next big star.
