Life is a drag, especially for ex-drag queen turned anti same-sex marriage North Carolina state Senate candidate Steve Wiles.
An active supporter of 2012’s Amendment One, a ballot initiative used to make it unconstitutional for the state of NC to recognize and.or perform same-sex marriages, has hit hot water this week after his past of high heels and pantyhose came into the light.
Now 34, Wiles had a career as “Mona Sinclair” in his early 20s, but even as recently as June of 2011 has been an active promoter for drag pageants. To make matters even stranger, his most recent actions as Mona lead to his permanent expulsion from the Miss Gay America pageant system for “conduct unbecoming [of] a Promoter of the Miss Gay America pageant system.”
Wiles, aka Mona Sinclair, first denied his past before finally confronting the allegations saying “My job was embarrassing – I had to have a job!” But anyone who has done drag or has friends who are queens knows just how expensive and time consuming drag is. His stance on gay rights has come heavily into the spotlight with Wilkes defending his stance by saying “I understand the gay community does not share my support for the Marriage Amendment – I RESPECT THAT and am very happy to discuss my views with any of my friends in the Democrat party and gay community.” Wiles also stated that, “I’m impressed by the way this story was used to present me to the conservative right as a gay advocate while at the same time presenting me as anti-gay to the gay community. THAT…is talent!”.
It seems his glory days did not dissuade his views to back the community he had a hand in and gave him a job when he needed it. While everyone is entitled to their own views this whole situation just seems like a crock pot full of hypocrisy.
