So You Think You Can Dance is coming back! After last season, which had less than stellar ratings, FOX is bringing back the dance competition series for its 14th season, in what is being referred to as a “back to basics” season. This means that they’ll be returning to the original model of featuring dancers between the ages of 18-30, with the top 10 paired up with All Stars.
While host Cat Deeley is still in talks to resume her hosting duties, Paula Abdul has already confirmed that she will not be returning as judge, as she will be on tour while the series films. There is no word yet on who else may be returning.
The previous season’s attempt at shaking things up involved bringing on younger dancers between the ages of 8-13. Under the name So You Think You Can Dance: The Next Generation, Season 13 of the long-running program was considered a critical and ratings failure, with commentators questioning whether or not younger dancers had the maturity to deal with being in such a difficult -- and public -- competition.
Executive producer Nigel Lythgoe, however, is excited for the upcoming season and seems to think that returning to the original model will be just the boost the show needs.
“This season is about giving our loyal fan base what they’ve been asking for. We’ve decided to go back to basics by bringing the best of our past formats together for an exciting new summer featuring accomplished adult competitors partnered with fan-favorite All-Star dancers. And, of course, as in past seasons, there will be new surprises which are sure to wow our viewers.”
