Sofia Coppola Drops Out Of The Little Mermaid

Sofia Coppola will no longer be directing Disney’s live-action reboot of The Little Mermaid and cites creative differences as the reason.

It’s a sad day for fans of Sofia Coppola and The Little Mermaid, alike.

The Little Mermaid was the next Disney movie in line to get a live-action studio makeover, with Sofia Coppola set to direct it. The director, famous for movies such as The Bling Ring, Lost in Translation, and The Virgin Suicides, has cited creative differences as the reason for dropping out of the film.

Industry insiders say that the creative differences in question actually related to casting choices, and how Sofia wanted to go in one direction, while Universal Studios wanted to go a different route. Sofia apparently wanted to cast Maya Thurman Hawke, daughter of Ethan Hawke and Uma Thurman, as the main character Ariel, but Universal Studios felt that she might not be the best casting choice.

There is no word yet as to who might replace Sofia as the  new director of The Little Mermaid, but we do know that despite this sad loss, the show will go on and the studio plans on moving forward with this project. It has been listed as in development for some time now, so hopefully they find someone quick.

I, for one, am a little sad about Sofia’s decision to leave, as I was so looking forward to seeing her take on one of my favorite Disney movies ever! Who would you guys like to see as the new director?
