Something Mean Happens To “Somebody That I Used To Know” This Week On Grey’s Anatomy

This was one of those episodes that makes you want to scratch your eyes out and also keep watching because you’re so invested in the characters and then wonder why you’re so invested because you don’t understand what the characters are actually doing with their lives and then you realise it’s just a TV show and that you should really be asking what you are actually doing with your own life…

We open with a little montage of Bailey’s OCD symptoms and immediately we see Ben looking anxious. He’s probably thinking “I did not sign up for this” and we’re kind of all thinking the same thing. Here’s to hoping the writers go somewhere interesting with this storyline fast… Currently it just feels like an EMMYs grab for Chandra Wilson. (I mean we all know how much the academy loves giving prizes to peeps playing bonafide crazy female characters.)

It looks like Arizona finally made it home, although she’s still sleeping on the couch. Baby steps though, right? (Eeesh too soon? Sorry Calzona fans!)

In the house of MerDer, Mer hands Der the baby to rush off to work while he’s trying to tell her his latest genius neuro plot. Sorry Der, we don’t really care either… but at least it gives you something to do while we’re all focussing on the more interesting characters!

Owen and Emma have a cosy little chat in the meeting room while Callie, April and Christina gossip about them outside. Callie jokingly slags off Emma to boost Christina’s ego but when she leaves, her and April gush about how lovely Emma seems and how adorable she and Owen are together.

Jo and Stephanie both seem to be on Meredith’s service today: Jo informs her that Webber is requesting another stress test (despite having failed the first one just two minutes in) and Steph has some bad news about a (now terminal) patient.

Meanwhile, Christina and Alex are checking up on the sick baby (who needs the printer thing that Yang and Sharky are working on) when they decide to have a sex chat. Seems appropriate.

Christina is craving some human contact, like, for the “benefit of humanity”. Alex tells her just to pick a random guy and get her “ya yas” out. Christina realises it’s slim pickings on the random guy front and isn’t chuffed about her options…

Shane overhears the whole “ya ya” thing and figures he has a shot at scoring Christina. Lord knows why… He also informs her that their printer thing failed and so they need to start again, which means Meredith won’t get the printer back for another day. Christina realises this is going to majorly peeve her ex-twisted-sister but admits they have no choice.

Elsewhere, Kepner bounds into the staff room to give Stephanie an invite to her wedding, she’s being all squirmy and awkward about it and tells her to bring a plus one… It’s kinda obvious she just wants Jackson to come without having to actually invite Jackson but Stephanie seems to be the only person on the planet who doesn’t get that.

Alex starts to get anxious as the baby’s health takes a turn for the worse and he finds out that Christina and Shane will have to postpone surgery another day because the printer thing failed. He thinks they should just do another artificial graft to last the kid a couple of years until the fancy new surgery has been tried and tested properly. Christina tells him he needs to chill out and get laid.

Meanwhile, Ben’s trying to convince a mid-breakdown-Bailey that she should probably see a therapist (before she kills a patient with unnecessary procedures). Bailey doesn’t take kindly to this and digs at Ben for quitting his surgical internship.

Arizona seems to be having a tough time trying to keep Murphy from losing her mind when the two of them and Callie have to work on a case together. The patient in question is a little girl with a broken leg whose parents are away and is being taken care of by a panicked babysitter.

Ben eventually confides in Derek about Bailey’s OCD behaviours but regrets it when Derek tells him he’ll have to inform the board. So much for Ben thinking they were BFFs…

While waiting for an elevator, Shane plucks up the Red-Bull fuelled courage to hit on Christina with the phrase, “If you ever need a ‘ya ya’ extraction…” I guess that deserves props for pure audacity. Poor Christina, slim pickings indeed… Then again I do actually like Christina and Shane – he’s like a male version of herself at that age which is interesting and Yang could use some silliness before she leaves the show…

Meredith senses the presence of delicious muffins and traces them back to the meeting room where Owen and Emma are still chatting. It turns out Emma’s an ace cook so Meredith wrangles her in to cook Thanksgiving dinner for the entire MerDer crew (plus Owen). Derek later invites Calzona, Meredith also invites Webber, Alex and Jo but refuses to invite Christina much to everybody’s surprise. Poor Yang, y’all.

Later in the day…

BTW Derek’s eye-roll here is the greatest thing I’ve seen him do all season! Meredith is being so bitchy, I don’t like it! *Arms folded in protest* She’s leaving Christina all alone over the holidays, man. Super uncalled for…

Webber and Meredith are back to being their adorable selves when it comes to their relationship, though. Which is kinda weird considering the mean crap he said to her earlier in the season – are we dropping all that now? But she agrees to let him attempt another stress test and if he passes he can come to hers for Thanksgiving. He shakes on it, only after finding out that Meredith’s not cooking. Good call. Also, he doesn’t like mushroom stuffing. Another good call.

Whilst checking out the little girl’s leg x-ray, Arizona tells Callie that she got involved with someone while they were separated. She apologises but doesn’t think Callie should go nuts because they were separated at the time. #SorryNotSorry

She also asks if Callie got involved with anyone but Callie admits all she did was dance in her underwear. Then they try to hug it out. It’s an awkward, weird but still sorta sweet scene the likes of which we’ve come to expect from Calzona this season but I’m still waiting for some Arizona therapy sessions because girl is making zero sense right now.

I really hope they haven’t traded Arizona’s promised PTSD storyline for Bailey’s OCD storyline… Because the former would have been so much more interesting (and believable).

Elsewhere, Leah is crying in the stairwell because she’s sah stressed. Stephanie tells her to buck up and go talk to the babysitter (of the little girl with the broken leg) like she’s been told to, and to forget about Arizona. When Leah finds the babysitter to update her on the kid’s condition, though, she can’t help but draw parallels to her current Calzona situation.

Babysitter on possibility of kid’s parents firing her: “I guess it’s my fault, for getting so attached.”

In a scrub room nearby… Stephanie tells Jackson about her meeting with April and the two conclude that because she invited Stephanie (plus one) and will DEFO invite Jackson (plus one), she must be sending them an elaborate hint that she expects them to split up ASAP.

Jo and Alex discuss whether they want to go to Meredith’s house for Thanksgiving. Alex is all for it but Jo feels like she’d rather spend it “at the kid’s table” with her friends. Fair enough, back when our originals were in their second year I’m fairly sure they let Izzy cook a full dinner but none of them actually turned up to eat it… Lolz.

Meredith has a go at Christina for hogging the printer, so Christina drags her over to see the baby she’s trying to save. Meredith takes it as another dig at her being a mom now, though and basically tells Christina to shove off and give her back her printer. Oh dear.

During surgery, Callie figures out that Leah’s the one Arizona got involved with while they were separated and doesn’t take it too well.

But after a mild freak out, Arizona asserts herself and Callie seems to calm down.

GIF Courtesy of Tumblr GIF Courtesy of Tumblr

She tells Callie they need to either forgive each other and start fresh or just let go. This also means letting her back into the bed as she hates the couch.

Callie demands one night apart to let the Leah thing sink in, then she agrees that Arizona can come back to bed. Arizona begrudgingly agrees… Is this really how separated couples agree to get back together? Seems odd. Anywho…

Jackson confronts April about the invite, and she admits she can’t invite him directly because she doesn’t want to upset Matthew but she really wants him there so hopes he’ll come as Stephanie’s plus one because he’s her bestie. Aww jeez, you guys. Japril are too damn quirky and cute. I hope they don’t do a wedding crashers type thing with them. Then again that could be adorable in a tacky soap-style type way… DO IT SHONDA, DO IT…

Unfortunately, Webber pushes himself too hard on the treadmill during his do-over stress test, so he’s not well enough to go to Meredith’s place for Thanksgiving. But luckily the second year gals are on hand to cheer him up, they order a bucket of fried chicken and a bunch of sides to share. Hate to be a party pooper but I totally don’t think this is a healthy thing for doctors to do with their patients… particularly patients who have just failed their stress tests…

Down the hall, Owen and Meredith walk in on Bailey during one of her surgeries to intervene. Meredith moves one of her instruments and she has a mini-meltdown. Realising she may in fact be cray, Bailey stomps off. God I’m finding her annoying this season. I used to LOVE Bailey!

Afterwards, Meredith tracks down Christina and Shane who have hijacked the printer yet again and announce they’ll need it for another night. This displeases Meredith immensely and she becomes slightly venomous towards Christina, who is actually being very quiet for Christina.

Mer: “You are not Christ-child-incarnate! You have failed to revolutionise modern medicine and save a baby all in one fail swoop! And, you are endangering a child’s life!”

But Sharky’s not having any of it…

Oh snap! Go sharky! I know some people will be team Mer on this one but I’m so team Christina because Mer is being a total self-righteous annoyance and also… I’m completely over the whole chirpy MerDer thing. Dark and twisty FTW. But are we seriously about to see their epic ten year friendship end over a PRINTER?!

Meredith leaves with a chip on her shoulder and Christina thanks Shane for sticking up for her with a kiss.

I mean I know people are hating the Christina and Shane ship but somebody had to stick up for Yang in this moment… Jeez Mer…

At home, Ben and Bailey have a bit of a domestic over the Owen intervention. It all ends in tears when Bailey gets sidetracked by a chair… She proves that Ben has a serious point about her OCD when she kicks one over in anger and can’t help but return to straighten it afterwards.

Meredith also rants to Derek about Christina and it seems like Derek might be team Christina on this one even though he clearly wants to stay out of it. Let’s not forget that Derek and Christina have become quite close friends over the years… The post PTSD fishing trip, anyone?

Derek replies with, “Are you sure she was the one being mean?” but ducks out before Meredith can retort. It’s the end of a long day and as Christina walks over, everybody leaves. Such high school flashbacks happening right now. Y so mean people? It looks like Christina really has become an outsider and we’re halfway through her last season now…

Will things come to a fiery head between Yang and the others or will she just continue to faze out? I hope it’s the former because it would be real shame for her not to leave on good terms with everyone, especially Meredith. Until then… #StayStrongYang

And let’s hope Christina can take some of her own advice:
