Sony Pictures And Ubisoft Plan To Set Rabbids Loose On The Big Screen

Ubisoft's psychotic-yet-adorable characters, the 'Rabbids', have taken off as a commodity in their own right, and Sony Pictures is looking to turn them into stars on the big screen. Originally appearing as the chaotic, oddball antagonists to the heroic Rayman in his eponymous series of video games, the Rabbids have gone on to become popular additions to the gaming world, and have appeared in their own titles that range from party games to run-and-jump platformers. As fans grew to love and demand more of their antics, the Rabbids began to jump from one media to the next, spawning comic books, mobile games, merchandising and even an attraction at Futuroscope, a theme park based in France that incorporates multimedia and audio-visual effects into its design. Their recently-debuted spinoff television series, “Rabbids Invasion”, has achieved critical acclaim and recognition, having been viewed more than 165 million times in five months. More than two million viewers see each and every episode in the U.S. alone, thanks to Ubisoft Motion Pictures' partnership with Nickelodeon and France Televisions. Now the Rabbids have reached the big leagues, and Sony Pictures is teaming up with Ubisoft Motion Pictures in order to capture their essence for an even wider audience. Jean-Julien Baronnet, Executive Director for Ubisoft Motion Pictures, and Hannah Minghella, President of Production for Columbia Pictures, had this to say in regards to the decision: “Sony Pictures has tremendous experience developing hybrid live-action-and-animated blockbusters for audiences around the world, which makes them a natural fit for what we want to achieve with a Rabbids film,” Baronnet went on to explain: “This deal deepens our partnership with Sony Pictures and highlights our holistic approach to bringing Ubisoft’s brands to new audiences while still maintaining the brands’ creative integrity.” Minghella spoke of the Rabbids themselves, and what they could potentially bring to an animated motion picture: “There is an infectious quality to the Rabbids. Their simple joy and absurd, anarchic behavior inadvertently causes you to look at the world afresh. There’s no end to the comedy and chaos they will cause when they invade our theaters.” Ubisoft Motion Pictures will oversee the project at Ubisoft headquarters, where the group plans to actively take part in the film's development. Minghella and Jonathan Kadin will represent Sony Pictures, overseeing the project as well. Rabbids fan rejoice, and be sure to celebrate with your best and loudest “BWAAAAAAAAH!”
