We finally got a Callie centric episode! And it was awesome! I mean, isn’t it like an unwritten Grey's rule for Shonda Rhimes not to give fans what they want? Exhibit A:

Damn showrunners... So imagine our surprise last night to have our minds indeed blown. Compared to last week, it was a total home run, and had tons of Calzona!

Callie Drama...

We open with Callie having a freak out in the middle of store over buying pantyhose. Whilst yelling needlessly at the shop assistant she flashes back to various arguments with Arizona, where Callie walks away from her over and over again, and they both cry a lot.

Callie's Voiceover: “It’s not like we do it on purpose, it’s not like we want to hurt anyone but sometimes we do. Sometimes we make mistakes and when we blow it, we’re sorry.”

ONE MONTH AGO We're at the hospital watching Callie get served with a lawsuit during a seminar.

FOUR MONTHS AGO We're at Meredith's baby shower and Christina is telling Callie that she'll be treating her ex-patient, an Olympic snowboarder who needs a hip replacement. Callie is super excited. Christina brags about how well she operated on him. Christina: "I believe my valve is what gives him his edge! His heart is my Mona Lisa, don't screw it up," she jests. Oh Christina, you legend.

Arizona interrupts to inquire about the missing onesie station at the baby shower. Proof that Arizona's personality as drastically changed over the last couple of seasons. (Not necessarily a bad thing in this case maybe, but still.)

Arizona: "Let's have a baby!" Callie: "Wait, what? Are you serious!" Arizona: "Well we've had such a hard year with the crash and wouldn't it be nice to have something new and happy to think about?" Callie: "Yes! Yes! But I..." Arizona: "I could carry it this time and then only one of our feet would be sausages." Callie: "Arizona.. *smiles* Arizona: "So you wanna?" Callie: "Yes! Oh my god yes!"

You can almost hear the fanfic writers' rejoice. Back at the hospital, we meet the famous snowboarder, a charming young man who has the interns all in a tizz and gives Christina a big hug. He's a risk taker and adamant that he wants to receive a Peterson Hip Joint (whatever that is...). Callie admits she's never done the surgery but will research it before she agrees to do it. Snowboarder dude tells her he knows she'll want to do it because - like him - she's not afraid of firsts. If a surgeon told me they were unsure about how to do a surgery, I'd probably go elsewhere but maybe that's just me... Cut to a discussion with her lawyer, where Callie insists she wasn't negligent in agreeing to do the surgery. Callie: "It wasn't a mistake Greg, I'm not settling." He tells her to dress "professional but feminine" for the trial and to wear her wedding ring as jurors respond best to women who are married with a family. Next of all Callie's rushing around pulling her pantyhose on as Arizona arrives to collect Sofia and offer some support. She's surprised Callie's put her wedding ring back on but Callie tells her it's only because her lawyer told her to wear it to the trial.

Then Owen's helping her squeeze past paps to get into the courtroom. She's surprised he's there and he jokingly tells her they've all agreed to tag team so that somebody's with her in the courtroom at all times.  Owen: "I had to fight Bailey for this first shift. Turns out she punches pretty hard for such a little person."

As annoying as Owen is, I actually like his friendship with Callie. This girl has hilarious friendships with pretty much everyone on the show though so I guess that's not too surprising. She enters the courtroom and takes a seat despite judgey looks from the jurors. Snowboarder dude enters in a wheelchair. He's had a double amputation. "Oh crap." Callie realises winning this case is going to be an uphill battle...

We cut to the original surgery. Everything went well until snowboarder dude's heart rate went cray and Callie had to close despite knowing there was a sponge somewhere inside the guy's hip. Ouch... and also gross. Jo's being interrogated on the stand; she sticks up for Callie by telling the jurors that Callie had no choice but to close, when the patient contracted a post-op infection it was nothing Callie could have prevented. They take him back into surgery to clean the wound properly but the infection is so severe that she has to remove the entire hip and replace it later. I'm assuming they took out the sponge at this point too otherwise, where is that thing? We never actually see them take it out! During a trial recess, Callie's in the bathroom changing her pantyhose because the ones she was wearing had laddered. Arizona walks in on her and again tries to comfort her by giving her one of Sofia's drawings to focus on when she feels angry or upset. It'll calm her down, Arizona reasons. She also points out the pantyhose she's changing into have gemstone butterflies on them.

Tweeps online have already pointed out the butterfly allusion to early season 5 Calzona....

We then cut back to a few months ago; Callie and Arizona are chilling out, drinking wine and trying to pick out a sperm donor.

Next scene gives us the return of Papa Torres! A fan fave guest star, amen for Hector Elizondo. He calls round to give Callie some words of wisdom about the trial but he winds up talking to Callie about Arizona. She tells him they've split up because Arizona cheated and that she feels pathetic. Papa Torres replies with "nothing about you is pathetic". Flash to Callie coming home late from work with a pizza when Arizona calls her into the bathroom to tell her she's preggo.

Calzona back to being adorable. Then we're pulled back to the recent past where the hospital board (MerDer, Jackson and Co) decide to settle with the snowboarder (who is suing the hospital and Callie separately). Christina tells the other board members that she was there, and the patient has a strong case against Callie, she thinks they should all definitely settle.  On the stand, Christina doesn't really stand up for Callie - clearly she feels Callie made some mistakes in her approach to the case and feels conflicted about whether she should say that on the stand. She tells the jurors that she recommended Callie to the snowboarder because she was the best orthopedic surgeon she knew. "Was?" the snowboarder's lawyer inquires... In the flashbacks we see Callie insist that she should operate on the guy's necrotic leg before Christina operates on his heart, though Christina disagrees. Callie shouts her down and the lawyer queries whether Christina was bullied by Callie when Christina was probably right. It's a question left unanswered, but as much as we all love Callie she is definitely flawed and can definitely be a bit of a bully and that's definitely part of the reason we all love her.

After operating on the snowboarder, Callie thinks the problem has been rectified until she checks on him and discovers that now both of his legs are necrotic. Oh dear. During the trial recess, Callie bumps into Richard in the hallway. He's being pushed in a wheelchair by Kepner who claims she couldn't keep him away! Nawwww #WalkTallTorres Richard: "I'd have been here sooner but Kepner's a terrible driver!" God I love Kepner when everyone's making fun of her. We then cut to Callie and Arizona house hunting in the suburbs (they were so close to their happy ending, how tragic). Callie quickly emails the folks in Germany who did a recent Peterson Hip Joint trial to see if she can look at their data. Arizona tells her to chill out, as she probably won't hear from Germany until their trial is published. She also trips over and Callie is concerned but she seems fine.

During the snowboarder's time on the stand he claims Callie admitted her guilt to him by apologising in the hospital after amputating both his legs. In another flashback we get the gist of what actually happened... Callie saw him taking out his anger and frustration on his girlfriend, much like Arizona did to Callie after her leg was amputated. Callie tells the snowboarder that if he needs to be angry at somebody he should be angry at her, not his girlfriend because Callie claims, "I can take it." Then we flick to Arizona picking up Sofia before the trial (there's an epic stare-off between Papa Torres and Arizona, who's not good with authority figures, remember?) and Callie tells her dad she'll have to take the stand later that day.

And then in a random (though awesome) turn of events, Papa Torres speaks on behalf of fans everywhere when he voices the following thought:

He doesn't understand why Arizona has moved out instead of trying to make their marriage work. Callie tells him she's the one who kicked her out, Arizona's not running away. While on the stand, Callie tries to insist that she made all the right calls and the sequence of events that led to the amputation did not reflect negligence on her part. Then we flick back to a very distracted Callie, who'd just ordered a scan of the snowboarder's body to find the missing sponge. Arizona reminds her that she missed the appointment for their first scan.

On the stand, Callie tries to explain that she wasn't bullying Christina; they were arguing heatedly because it was a question of which fire to put out first and they were both right. She then flashes back to an argument with Arizona who was trying to talk about her feelings about losing the baby but Callie was distracted by her snowboarding patient and didn't stick around for much of a discussion. I guess we're seeing more of why Arizona cheated, she felt like she'd lost everything anyway.

The trial ends as Callie tells the jurors that she apologised to the snowboarder because she empathised with him not because she's negligent. She also tells them that her wife lost a leg last year so she knows exactly what he was feeling. Afterwards, she walks home with Meredith and finds a letter from the German folks warning her that they ended their trial because so many patients experienced the same infection her snowboarding patient suffered from. The letter had been lost behind her cabinet. Callie realises her mistake was losing the letter; if she'd read it when it originally arrived she never would have done the surgery. Meredith tells her not to show the letter to her lawyer or hand it over to the court. Callie: "I can't just sit on this I have to tell someone..." Meredith: "I wouldn't, you didn't willfully ignore any data, you didn't act irresponsibly or maliciously, you worked off the information you had at the time and then an act of God happened... Accidents happen, that's the job! this one happened in your living room not the OR." In the middle of their squabble, Callie gets a call from her lawyer telling her they've reached verdict. She panics but ultimately throws away the letter and walks into the courtroom. Callie's Voiceover: "We've all done things we aren't proud of. I understand that. But how do you live with it? How do you get up every morning and face the world knowing you could've done better. That you should've done better. Is being sorry enough? Can an apology actually heal our wounds? Ease our pain? Can it actually undo the hurt we've caused?" The verdict reached is "not guilty". Everybody looks happy except for Callie, who looks shocked, and Christina, who looks pensive. We're definitely starting to see Christina as more of an outsider... Back at her apartment, Callie seems to respond to her voiceover by telling her dad that just because Arizona says she's sorry, it's not enough. Her dad reveals that he cheated on Callie's mother when he was young and if her mother hadn't forgiven him Callie wouldn't be alive today. Food for thought from Papa Torres. In the final scene of the episode, Callie knocks on Arizona's hotel room door.

Yay! But then we all know what's coming, sorta. Arizona retreats back to her bed.

Oh snap, what are we gonna do with a little problem called, Leah? Obviously Callie will find out at some point so fingers crossed she won't consider it cheating (although let's face it, she probably will). But can we talk about how hilariously cold Arizona has been with Leah I mean...

Yep, basically that.

Overall...

An awesome special episode of Grey's Anatomy this week, just when you think it's lost the plot it sucks you back in with a hurricane of emotional drama and a thread of medical metaphor. The way they interwove backstory and plot development was really well executed. I just hope this is the start of a much improved season, rather than the peak of a mediocre one! See y'all next week for all the Christina one liners... http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mFCfo3jO32s http://www.Twitter.com/PopWrapped https://pop-wrapped.tumblr.com http://www.SoundCloud.com/PopWrapped http://www.Facebook.com/PopWrapped http://www.Instagram.com/PopWrapped http://www.Pinterest.com/PopWrapped http://www.YouTube.com/PopWrapped https://pop-wrapped.wordpress.com http://www.PopWrapped.com
