Thanks to strong results from the Chinese box office, Spider-Man: Homecoming is now the highest grossing superhero origin story of all time at the worldwide box office!
Even a delay can't stop this hero!
The coming of age superhero mashup starring Tom Holland is the first of Sony's rebooted Spider-Man franchise. The movie had its wide release in the United States in July where it grossed $117 million. It was also meant to open in China around the same time but was delayed by the Chinese government's blackout policy on foreign films during the summer.
Well, the delay seemed to have not impacted the film in a negative way because it was able to haul in an impressive $70.8 million in its first three days of release within China this weekend!
This pushes its accumulated worldwide gross to $823 million, just a notch above previous champion Sam Raimi's Spider-Man starring Toby Maguire which ended up grossing $821 million in 2002.
It also makes the movie the second highest grossing Spider-Man film in the franchise's history. It has already beaten all the Amazing Spider-Man films which starred Andrew Garfield, but is still behind Spider-Man 3 which earned $890.9 million worldwide. If it proves to have legs in the Chinese market, it may be on its way to surpassing that and could possibly even make it to $900 million.
Could it be the best superhero movie of the year?
Currently it is projected to earn $880 million, so the chances of it beating that record is still up in the air. What is more probable though is that it may become the highest grossing superhero film of the year. It has already beaten Wonder Woman which has grossed $816.3 million, and it is within striking distance of James Gunn's Guardians Of The Galaxy Vol.2 which currently sits at $863.3 million.
Sony must be so glad that they chose to team up with the Marvel Studios...take a hint, 20th Century Fox!
