Gary David Goldberg, Emmy-award winning creator of Family Ties, Brooklyn Bridge and co-creator of Spin City has passed away, two days before his 69th birthday, at his home in Montecito, California, after a long battle with brain cancer.
Born June 25, 1944, in Brooklyn, New York, Goldberg attended Brandeis University in Waltham, Massachusetts and then San Diego University, where he ultimately decided to become a writer. His first writing job came in the mid 1970’s, when he was hired as a writer for CBS’ The Bob Newhart Show. This was later followed by The Tony Randall Show and later he received his first Emmy in 1979 for his work on Lou Grant. In 1981, he formed his own production company, Ubu Productions, and in 1982, created Family Ties for which he earned his second Emmy in 1987. He also produced three feature films, Dad, Bye Bye Love and Must Love Dogs.
As well as being the recipient of two Emmy awards, Goldberg also received four Writers Guild of America awards in 1979, 1988, 1998 and 2010. In 1991 he was awarded Producer of the Year by the Producers Guild and the Valentine Davies Award from the Writers Guild in 1998 for his contributions to the entertainment industry. He also received the 1994 Women in Film Lucy Award in recognition of excellence and innovation in creative works that have enhanced the perception of women through the medium of television and in 2001 the Austin Film Festival’s Outstanding Television Writer award.
While the general viewing audience might not have know his name, they will most certainly know Ubu, Goldberg’s black Labrador and the namesake of his company, who appeared in the closing credits of all of his work, along with the famous tagline “Sit Ubu sit. Good dog” followed by a hearty “Woof”
Gary David Goldberg is survived by his wife and partner of 43 years Diana Meehan and their two daughters, Shana Goldberg-Meehan and Cailin Goldberg Meehan.
