Earlier this week, the Walt Disney Company confirmed that it plans on doing stand-alone or spin-off Star Wars films that are outside of the films prequel trilogy, original trilogy and new trilogy timeline.
While rumors were that one of these films would feature Yoda, Entertainment Weekly has reported that honor has gone to scoundrel Han Solo and the bounty hunter Boba Fett.
While Lucasfilm and Disney have yet to confirm anything, the Han Solo project is expected to show the adventures of the young space pirate, who was played in the original trilogy by Harrison Ford. The timeline of the spin-off film is assumed to be between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope.
Meanwhile, the Boba Fett film is rumored to take place between A New Hope and The Empire Strikes Back or between Empire and Return of the Jedi.
Entertainment Weekly points out in its article that with these films taking place within the original trilogy time period, we can expect to see familiar villains like Darth Vader and especially Jabba the Hutt given the connection the space gangster has to both characters.
The article notes the screenwriters for these stand-alone films will be Simon Kinberg (Mr. & Mrs. Smith) and Lawrence Kasdan, who was the screenwriter for Empire Strikes Back.
There is no timeframe as to when these spin-off films will be released but we do know that Star Wars Episode VII directed by J.J. Abrams will be released in 2015.
