There’s been loads of recent news coming out about the much-hyped new Star Wars trilogy. However, fans have to wait till 2015 for that to hit their local cinemas. But do not fear Lucasfilm and Disney are going to provide you with something special to whet your appetite and tide you over till then… a new animated series.

That’s right, news can through yesterday (20 May) that the series Star Wars Rebels will be making its debut in autumn 2014. Rebels will premiere on the Disney Channel before moving to its permanent home over on Disney XD.

There have been very few details released about the new series. For example, whether it will follow known characters, new characters or a mixture of the two. What we do know that it will be set between the current two trilogies (so between Revenge of the Sith and A New Hope). That gives writers about 18 years to play around with including the rise of the Empire, the beginnings of the Rebel Alliance and the childhoods of Luke Skywalker and Leia Organa.

Executive producers on the new series are Dave Filoni (Star Wars The Clone Wars), Simon Kinberg (Sherlock Holmes, Mr. and Mrs. Smith) and Greg Weisman (Young Justice, Gargoyles).
