You’ve seen the Disney movie, you’ve read the folk tales, and now the team that brought you A Very Potter Musical puts their own spin on the classic tale! Starkid Productions brings you Twisted: The Untold Story of a Royal Vizier. The musical follows Royal Vizier Jafar (played by Dylan Saunders), advisor to the Sultan and confidant to Princess Jasmine. It explains his side of things: how he came to get a job at the palace, how he fell in love with a beautiful girl, and how he only ever wanted what was best for the people of Agrabah. But can a young man, who grew up following the Golden Rule, climb the ranks of the Vizier and make a difference in the world? The Sultan, while hilarious, is easily swayed; Aladdin (yes, we spelled it right—they said so in the play!) is only ever after one thing; and Jasmine is so caught up in her desire for everything—and more—that she almost misses the big picture. It is up to Jafar to make everyone see that life isn’t about how much money you make, how many people you know, or even the amount of freedom you have. It’s about doing the best with what you have, and striving to make what you have and wish for available for others. Other Disney villains and characters join Saunders’ Jafar. Jaime Lyn Beatty makes an appearance as Ursula, the poor unfortunate soul whose throne was stolen by her brother; and Lauren Lopez, among her other roles in the show, plays Maleficent, the “evil queen” who only ever wanted to be included. New faces—but not unknown actors—to Team Starkid take the stage in this witty and fresh take on Aladdin’s story. Check out Tarra Matthews and Stephanie Walsh’s full review of the live show when it was performed back in July 2013. Team Starkid released Twisted online today. You can watch it in parts or the complete show on YouTube.
