Steve Carell is stepping away from his comedic roots to play a darker role in the upcoming movie Foxcatcher.
Carell will play a schizophrenic murderer, John Du Point. It is based on the real life 1996 murder of Olympic wrestler David Shultz – who will be played by Mark Ruffalo.
Sienna Miller will play Carell’s wife, Nancy, and  Magic Mike star Channing Tatum will play Carrell’s younger brother in the movie.
Bennett Miller will direct the movie and partner with Sony Picture Classics to release Foxcatcher later this year on December 20.Miller previously partner with Sony in his 2005 movie, Capote.
Miller told The Hollywood Reporter that he’s been talking about Foxcatcher with Michael [Barker] and Tom [Bernard]  since starting research in 2005 and had always hoped Sony would distribute the film. Their understanding of the direction he wanted to take the film and the way they worked with him on Capote, he couldn’t see partnering with anyone else but SPC.
