With Sherlock season 3 coming to an end in the US and having already finished in the UK, fans are already begging for more seasons and wondering what’s next? Just recently, Sherlock’s creator Steven Moffat and producer Sue Vertue sat down with collider.com to talk about the show’s future and boy did they leave us anxious. With rumors flying around the Internet that a new season could be ready by Christmas, fans went absolutely mad. Less than a year for a new season? Ridiculous, I'll believe it when I see it! This reaction was rightfully caused by the 2 year hiatus that Sherlock recently took between its 2nd and 3rd seasons. When asked about the recent two year stretch and if they believed their fans would still be there Moffat replied, “There was still so much interest in Sherlock that we didn’t have any doubt.  We didn’t expect the audience to be larger.  It’s gotten larger each year.  Contrary to what people think, that doesn’t happen.  With very, very rare exceptions, audiences, even with huge hits, go gently down.  Even for massively successful shows, they decline gently over time.  That’s normal and fair enough.  Sherlock has grown each year, which is spectacular.  So, we didn’t doubt that the audience was still there.” With the increasing fame that Sherlock has brought it’s two main stars, Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman, Sherlock becomes second priority. During the interview, Vertue commented on the busy schedules of the two, "they want to do more.  It’s just trying to get everyone free, at the same time. That’s just what I’m doing now.  Benedict said, 'I’m free in February,' and I said, ‘But, we haven’t got a script!’  I’m working on it. “ Not only have Cumberbatch and Freeman become increasingly busy, Mark Gatiss has a completely different “day job” as he calls it. “I’ve also got to do Doctor Who.  I’ve got no choice about that.  That’s the day job.  Everyone is a little bit busy.  But also, it’s worked to make them wait.” So the hopes of getting a new season by Christmas are extremely far fetched, but do not fret Sherlockians, there will be at least two more seasons! When asked if he and Mark Gatiss really had plans for the next two seasons, Moffat replied, “Yes, we do.  It’s really [Season] 4 that we’ve got, but it throws forward to a terrifying [Season] 5.” But Moffat nor Vertue shared any light on what these “terrifying” things might be, so we are just going to have to wait! At least a year.. Or more.. But as Sherlockians, we have and always shall prevail! You can watch the Sherlock season 3 finale on PBS Masterpiece February 2nd.
