Fans of Doctor Who have long speculated how and when the 50 year old drama will end. But, according to showrunner Steven Moffat, we could be finding out the answer to that question a lot sooner than anyone expected. British tabloid, The Mirror, has reported that the Doctor’s story will reach its conclusion this Christmas, with the revelation that Matt Smith is not in fact the eleventh Doctor as previously believed, but the thirteenth. A source has shared the chilling information with The Mirror that, in the Christmas special, the Doctor reveals that, "I'm dying and there is nothing I can do about it." Mark Jeffries reports the shocking twist to the Time Lord’s tale, and explains that, “John Hurt is officially now a doctor and David Tennant used up an extra regeneration during his stay.” “In essence,” he writes, “the end of Matt at Christmas should mean the end of Doctor Who.” Speaking at the 50th Anniversary Celebrations in London this weekend, Moffat confirmed Matt Smith’s role as the thirteenth Doctor, and discussed what this means for the show, citing Doctor Who folklore for his reasoning: "The 12 regenerations limit is a central part of Doctor Who mythology - science fiction is all about rules; you can't just casually break them.” Moffat also cast a question mark over the role of Peter Capaldi, revealed in August to be stepping into Smith’s shoes after his departure at Christmas, asking: "So if the Doctor can never change again, what's Peter Capaldi doing in the Christmas special?" I think that’s something we would all like an answer to. One thing is for sure, it is going to be a nail biting few weeks for us Whovians!
