Steven Moffat Says Christopher Eccleston Absence Is No Surprise

Over 10 million of us in the UK, alone, were glued to our seats last night as the Doctor raced through time and space in the highly anticipated Doctor Who: The Day of the Doctor. But for all the celebratory moments, reunions, and nail biting, there was one prominent cast member that was notably absent: Christopher Eccleston. Fans of the series will have known for some time there was little hope of having Eccleston return for this special episode, but was it a surprise to the show runners? How in an interview with BBC America, Steven Moffat revealed: “I sort of knew that he wouldn’t [do it]. I did a couple of meetings, and there was a moment, I suppose, a giddy moment where [I thought] ‘Would he actually do it?’ For many of us, Christopher Eccleston’s Doctor was our indoctrination into the world of Daleks, sonic screwdrivers, and that famous blue police box. However, following news of his departure from the show in 2005, Eccleston’s history with the show has been troubled. Despite reports earlier in the year claiming Eccleston pulled out of the 50th Anniversary celebrations after initially agreeing to participate, the BBC has always denied this was the case. Yesterday discussing Eccleston declining a reprisal of his role as the Doctor, Moffat said: “This wasn’t the kind of decision he took in a funk or that he was cross. He was very measured, very kind, very gentlemanly about it. He’s a good bloke.” Speaking about Eccleston’s portrayal, Moffat added: “The Ninth Doctor turns up for the battle and not the party.”
