The 2013 Christmas episode of Doctor Who has begun filming, and it’s going to be a heartwrencher. Matt Smith’s final episode as the Eleventh Doctor will air this Christmas, and showrunner Steven Moffat is already preparing fans for the worst.
“It’s hard to let go,” said Moffat. “[I] was watching him on set… and he’s so heartbreakingly good.”
“You get all excited about the new Doctor,” Moffat added, “and then you go back, and you see Matt on his first day back on set, and you think, ‘Oh my God, that’s what we’re losing.’
Though effusively praising Smith as “funny,” “clever,” and “inventive,” Moffat had equally good things to say about the upcoming Twelfth incarnation of the infamous Time Lord. The Hour’s Peter Capaldi has been announced as Smith’s replacement, and Moffat calls him a “genius-level actor.”
“[Peter’s] very excited and thrilled,” said Moffat. “He’s a brilliant actor and he wanted the part, so that was it.”
Doctor Who returns on November 23rd, when the 75-minute 50th Anniversary Special “The Day of the Doctor” will be simulcast worldwide.
