When I was a kid, Roald Dahl’s The BFG was one of my absolute favorite books, and the animated feature that followed was one I must’ve watched dozens of times. So when I heard that Steven Spielberg was creating a live action adaptation, I was very excited yet a little nervous.
When the first teaser trailer hit the web, I liked what I saw, but was still a little skeptical on the whole project. But now, a brand new full trailer for the film has released and I have to say, my excitement for this film has skyrocketed.
This trailer gives fans their very first look at the titular character, The BFG (The Big, Friendly Giant, for those unfamiliar with the story), who is being played by Academy Award winner Mark Rylance (Bridge of Spies), and he looks great. It looks like Spielberg pulled the character right off the page and on to the big screen.
In the trailer, we see Sophie, played by Ruby Barnhill, plucked from her orphanage bed in the middle of the night and taken to giant country by the BFG. This is Barhnill’s very first feature film role, and what a role it is.
The film looks beautiful, with dark, yet colorful scenery, a perfectly scaled BFG, and a Giant Country that looks as amazing as I’ve always imagined.
Check out the trailer below:
Ten-year-old Sophie is in for the adventure of a lifetime when she meets the Big Friendly Giant (Mark Rylance). Naturally scared at first, the young girl soon realizes that the 24-foot behemoth is actually quite gentle and charming. As their friendship grows, Sophie’s presence attracts the unwanted attention of Bloodbottler, Fleshlumpeater and other giants. After traveling to London, Sophie and the BFG must convince Queen Victoria to help them get rid of all the bad giants once and for all.
The BFG is set to hit theaters on July 1, 2016.
