Last week, a woman was attacked while riding the subway in New York City. A man had been touching himself in the train’s last car before noticing the woman. The man chased her and jumped on her, attempting to sexual assault her inside the subway car.

As the woman struggled to free herself from her attacker, fellow bystanders simply stood by and watched.

Maurice Osborne, a 37-year-old man who lives in a homeless shelter, didn’t see the event start but heard the woman’s cries for help. He leapt into action and pulled the attacker out of the subway car. Maurice then head-butted the man, and physically dragged him by the collar out of the subway station, across the street, and into the police station.  The victim followed to tell officers exactly what happened.

Osborne is currently studying to become a medical assistant, citing his affinity for helping people. He’s said that it makes him “feel useful.” Osborne hopes that his story will inspire others to get involved when they see people in need of help.

As a thank you to Osborne for intervening, a group of women in New York began an online fundraiser “on behalf of women everywhere” to help the Subway Hero further his education.

In only a few short days, they were able to raise over $13,000 to help Osborne cover tuition and other expenses.
