Super Mario Odyssey Sends Mario On A Grand Adventure

The newest trailer for Super Mario Odyssey for the Nintendo Switch shows Mario exploring a wide range of locations- even dropping into our world.

During the Nintendo Switch presentation, Nintendo revealed details about the upcoming platform and released a wide array of game trailers. One of the earliest to be unveiled was the newest addition to the Mario franchise, Super Mario Odyssey. Odyssey was hinted at in October 2016 when the Switch was first announced, but now fans are able to see a more detailed trailer.

Similar to Super Mario 64, Odyssey has Mario traversing large, scenic areas. Several locations are showcased in the trailer: a metropolis that looks a lot like New York City, a town in a desert, a massive, lush forest, and a vegetable garden filled with brightly colored plants. He travels from place to place in a large, aerial submarine.

Mario’s cap seems to be one of the major features of the game and is also included in the game’s logo. When he tosses his hat, it sprouts wings and works like a boomerang. It can attack enemies and acts as a platform for Mario to leap long distances. At the very end of the trailer, Mario’s hat grows a pair of eyes, which suggests that his hat might be possessed or have something living inside of it for the duration of the game.

All in all, the game seems to be a lot of fun. The scenic backgrounds are nicely detailed, and it is amusing to see the cartoon Mario skipping rope with regularly proportioned people. From Mario jumping between buildings in an alleyway to kicking up flowers on a mossy trail, the gameplay directly interacts with the surroundings. The usual faces of Bowser and Peach show up in the plot, but most of the focus seems to be on exploring different places outside of the Mushroom Kingdom.

Super Mario Odyssey is set to be released during the holiday season of 2017.
