This week on Supergirl episode 05×14, “The Bodyguard”, it’s time for the launch of Obsidian Platinum VR. This can only mean something bad is about to happen since National City villains seem to love attacking big events. With twelve hours before the launch, pink electricity attacks Andrea in the elevator. Thankfully, Supergirl is nearby and saves her. Unfortunately for Supergirl, this means that Lex assigns her to be Andrea’s bodyguard for the day until the launch. It’s still strange that Supergirl is taking orders from Lex Luthor. But Lex reminds Supergirl that he has leverage on her.

Supergirl enlists Alex, who is struggling with not working at the DEO any more, and J’onn’s help to track down the source of the electricity. They discover it could be a Chlorophyllian. They track the alien to a deserted farmhouse, with no help from Brainy who lies to them and says it’s not in the DEO’s system. At the farmhouse, Alex and J’onn discover that Todd Sapphire, a Chlorophyllian lived there before. But he committed suicide the previous year after being fired from Obsidian for stealing a VR prototype. His suicide note is addressed to his wife, Amy, who becomes the primary suspect.

Of course, Alex and J’onn are right and they figure out Amy’s plan is to stop the launch. She says that no one should have to suffer like she did and attacks CatCo. Supergirl rushes Andrea to the DEO where Brainy puts her in a cell to keep her out of harm’s way. Brainy also realizes that Obsidian’s failsafe will cause a massive city-wide blackout and transformer explosions, causing fires and casualties. In typical Supergirl fashion, all it takes is a little talking to about doing the right thing and “is that really what Todd would have wanted?” in order for Amy to stop the attack at the last possible second. Obsidian Platinum successfully launches. Brainy tells Lex that he was unable to take the power core offline but Lex doesn’t care that 67% of the population. Lex just wants to make good with Gemma Cooper, who may be connected to Leviathan.

Meanwhile, Lena’s Non Nocere is ready for human trials after seeing the success with animal subjects. Lena administers the Non Necere to volunteer prisoners at the prison the Luthor’s own. The results are mostly favourable. Violent prisoners become kinder but one prisoner, Steve Lomeli, who is used to being beaten up by other prisoners, becomes violent as his fear has been replaced by aggression. Lena adjusts the formula and gives a new does to Steve, who admits he now feels safe. I suppose you could call this a success.

At the end of the episode, Kara reconsiders William’s proposal of a date. After William spent the day with Supergirl (he was covering the Obsidian launch) and talking about living in the real world versus living in virtual reality and his feelings for his coworker, Kara, Kara realizes that William might be an okay guy to date.
