Everyone's favorite wolf pack will soon be down one vital member. Jeff Davis has confirmed that the fifth season of Teen Wolf will see the exit of the hunky, sour-wolf Derek Hale (Tyler Hoechlin). This comes as an immense surprise, considering we left off with Derek shifting into a full-fledged wolf at the end of season 4.
In a recent interview, Jeff Davis revealed that Hoechlin will no longer be a series regular, because Hoechlin wants to pursue and focus on his career in films. Davis elaborated:
"We talked and creatively agreed that maybe this was a good season to refocus on the teens of Teen Wolf, and while he won’t be a series regular anymore, I can say that you probably won’t have seen the last of Derek Hale. We love him and miss him”.
With Hoechlin's departure comes the question of how Derek's story-line will be wrapped up. Since Davis has left the door wide open for Hoechlin's return, it's highly possible that Derek will leave town, just like he did previously in the finale of Season 3, "Lunar Eclipse." If Derek doesn't leave town, could we see the return of a younger Derek Hale (Ian Nelson), who was introduced to us earlier on in season 4? I would not be opposed to this idea. After all, if Davis wants to focus on the "teens" of Teen Wolf, then a teenage Derek Hale will fit right in. Plus, Ian Nelson was totally adorable in his role and I sincerely hope to see him make a grand return.
We'll miss you Tyler Hoechlin and hope that you'll return to Beacon Hills sometime in the future!
