As a teen, when your parents punish you, you know what to expect, right? Typically you can be grounded, or you lose your cell phone privileges. You don’t expect your punishment to be filmed and put on the internet for the whole world to see, right? For 13-year-old Izabel Laxamana, that was not the case.
Izabel’s father posted a fifteen second video to Youtube, in which Izabel can be seen standing in a garage. The video shows her sporting short hair, with strands of her formerly long hair littering the ground. It’s clear that Izabel did not want to cut her hair off.
In the background, a male voice speaks to Izabel:
“The consequences of getting messed up, man, you lost all that beautiful hair… Was it worth it?”
“No,” she responds.
“How many times did I warn you?”
“A lot.”
A few days after her father posted this video to Youtube, Izabel jumped off a highway overpass after getting out of a moving vehicle in Tacoma, Washington. She was taken to a hospital in Seattle, but unfortunately did not recover from her injuries. Izabel died on Saturday, May 29th.
While the terrible video of Izabel’s punishment may have led to her suicide, it has not been proven. Izabel also felt bullied at school, along with other pressures in her life.
There is a GoFundMe site dedicated to raising money for Izabel’s funeral costs.
Some people are calling for Izabel’s father, Jeff, to be criminally prosecuted for his “role” in Izabel’s suicide. The Laxamana family has asked for privacy at this time.
