That Awkward Moment Proves To Be Hilarious, A Bit Long And Definitely Awkward

That awkward moment when you’re not sure how to classify That Awkward Moment; is it a buddy comedy or is it a chick flick? The movie focuses on three best friends from college as they navigate dating in New York City. At first glance, you think it’s definitely a bro movie. But here’s the thing, the leading men are awfully pretty… and there’s way too much heart for it not to hover in the chick flick realm.

Jason (Zac Efron) is a womanizer. He has a roster of women that he regularly sleeps with, as not to get too comfortable with any specific one. His best friend, Daniel (Miles Teller) subscribes to the same belief; he even has a female wingman who helps him pick up women in bars. Their friend, Mikey (Michael B. Jordan) is happily married, or so he thinks.  Upon finding out that his wife wants a divorce; the trio makes a pact (that never ends well) to remain single and carefree to help Mikey through this tough time. Cue the complicated yet comical dating situations.

There are some ridiculously awkward moments scattered throughout the film. There are several laugh-out-loud moments. But unfortunately, I think by splitting the film to give each character a full story arch and wrap everything up in a neat little package makes the movie fall short. The running time is only 94 minutes, but at points I felt like I’d been sitting in the theater for well over two hours.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s worth watching, especially if you’re a fan of any of the three leads. There are some really, really funny moments, including a naked Zac Efron. But some scenes were a little bit cliché and maybe unnecessary, it made the movie drag; a 90 minute comedy should never drag.

That Awkward Moment opens today nationwide.
