dives right back in where we left off, with Clarke locating former grounder leader Anya, and a group of others who are hostages of Mt. Weather being drained of blood. Clarke slyly escapes the Mt. Weather containment room with Anya, and they are dropped out of a latch into a dumpster of dead grounders. The two fall into the bin; when a group of Reapers arrive, the girls play dead in a mine cart and bodies are thrown on top of them. The reapers take the two along with the bin of bodies leaving Clarke and Anya in dire circumstances once again.
Octavia tries to reason with the grounders and offers her assistance as a warrior to fight for them, (and find Lincoln) but their new leader commands them to kill her. Octavia manages to lose the trail of the grounders, but is now on her own in the wilderness to fend for herself. Maya decides to share the massive art storage with Jasper and the two bond over art appreciation but are just barely shy of a first kiss. Monty finds Jasper and shares his bad feeling about Clarke’s whereabouts, which Jasper dismisses for time with his new friend and love interest.
Clarke and Anya find a moment to exit the Reapers lair together, while Bellamy, Finn and Murphy continue the quest for their missing friends. When they notice a Grounder wearing something of Clarke’s they decide to make a move with Murphy distracting one long enough to be knocked out by a nearby Bellamy. After Abby admits to helping the boys escape to look for Clarke and company, Kane is subject to an outside influence by a commanding officer to instill their previous forms of punishment, until an accident leaves one of their own injured by a gun (misusing guns perhaps?).
Clarke and Anya make it a safe distance so Clarke explains that their blood was somehow used to heal others wounds and Anya decides to split ways, which Clarke attempts to rationalize with her for their survival. Anya somehow finds a quick escape, and takes it before Clarke can even finish her sentence. So much for possible teamwork, I gather? While the Grounders struggle to find the numbers to attack the Reapers, they decide to use Octavia to their advantage as the leader realized she has been lurking ever since her so called escape. “I’m not afraid.”
Octavia shows legitimate bravery and commitment to the mission. One of my favorite things about her character is that she can be a powerful, independent woman who also is in touch with her emotions, using them as fuel. It has made her one of many amazingly strong characters the show has repeatedly offered. Abby is taken from assisting patients and is tied up to be lashed by a taser rod repeatedly for others to view. As Kane demands more, he and Abby share a stare that indicates a scarred relationship at best.
The group with Bellamy demand answers from the captured Grounder and Finn begins to show extreme aggression at the thought of Clarke being harmed, almost killing him despite Bellamy’s opposition. This new side of Bellamy wants to avoid brutality but Murphy and Finn seem to have a different perception. The captive grounder quickly caves in, and gives them the answers they believe they needed and leave to locate the others. Octavia contributes to the Grounders attack against the Reapers and slices her way through a few, but is beyond destroyed when Lincoln isn’t found among the group they saved.
Clarke is located by Mt. Weather soldiers and when she’s taken back to the facility, Anya reemerges and helps by impairing the assailants. The two run through the tunnel that leads to a massive dam, with multiple tunnels exuding water that Clarke and Anya leap into with no other escape option. Kane approaches Abby with his plan to head out and find out more about the other factions, proposing that Abby take position as Chancellor in his absence. A broad gesture from someone who just had you beaten in public notably. As Murphy and Finn debate the moral reasoning to not kill their captive grounder, Finn takes matters into his own hands and guns him down in cold blood showing a more brutal side to the character. Clarke awakens to Anya apparently saving her, but is attacked by the grounder warrior and Anya explains she will not let Clarke’s actions against the grounders go unpunished.
When Octavia is left heartbroken and alone with the belief that Lincoln is dead, we cut to the Mt. Weather residents receiving their newest batch of offerings that include Lincoln himself. Is this an ally for Jasper and the others? Or is it doom and gloom for everyone left at the place of death wrapped up in happiness and prestigious art? We’ll have to find out on next week's episode!
Aedan’s Final Thoughts:
-Problems aside, Clarke and Anya are one dynamic team.
-With every episode Octavia becomes more of a fighter in her own right.
-Bellamy has begun to show a more Clarke type of leadership (Bellarke effect?)
-The co-existing relationship between Mt. Weather and the Reapers is a clever unexpected twist.
