Television? Check. Movies? Check. Commercials?
Americans, prepare to be conquered by the British come Super Bowl Sunday. The current British invasion appears to be without any boundaries as it adds commercials to its ever growing repertoire. They have chosen the perfect venue to launch their newest venture, the mother of all advertising fun: the American Super Bowl.
And whom, you might ask, could spearhead such an awesome attack sponsored by Jaguar, the car brand with the British heritage, no less? Why, the reigning bad-asses of villainy in the British acting world, of course! According to the NY Times, Iron Man 3’s Mandarin, Sir Ben Kingsley, Sherlock Holmes‘ Mark Strong, and Thor: The Dark World‘s Loki, Tom Hiddleston, three British thespians best well known for portraying villains, will be feature in a 60-second spot scheduled for the second half of Super Bowl XLVIII, to be broadcast by Fox on Feb. 2. They won’t be the only British in the production of the commercial as Tom Hooper, who directed films like The King’s Speech, will be directing the three baddies in this spot.
The lure of the dark side that roles of that three actors are famed for was the source of inspiration for the theme of the commercial and for a six-month campaign slogan that will follow its Super Bowl debut: “Good to be bad.”
Jaguar is part of quite a lengthy list of companies that will be first-time advertisers in the annual ad bowl inside the Super Bowl; They will join, among the others, Beats Music, Butterfinger, Cheerios, Chobani, Intuit and Squarespace.
Kingsley has already started his part of the invasion in the teaser commercial. The veteran actor is apparently dressed as if he were about to face James Bond in a high-stakes card game in Monte Carlo. Kingsley is said to dismiss Jaguar’s rivals as “the usual suspects” and snarkily threatens with a chuckle, “You’ll be hearing from us.” The teaser is to be followed on Jan. 28 by a 30-second, online version of the Super Bowl spot, with the full version of the commercial appearing in the game five days later.
