Despite the fact that the “pilot” episode was already shown back in April, The Originals has been re-cut and will be showing a new first episode when the series premieres on the CW in October.
Daniel Gillies, who plays the character of Elijah Mikaelson, told reporters at Comic-Con that the April episode was “overshot.” The new episode has nearly thirty minutes of original footage that will be combined with the already shot “ten to fifteen minutes” from the crossover episode from The Vampire Diaries. Since it was originally a Vampire Diaries episode, it had to be bookended by Stefan, Damon and Elena.
“It gives you time restraints,” Gillies explained. “They’re going to put in the pieces that will tell a hell of a lot more story.”
But how much more?
For starters, in this first episode we get to learn a little more about Phoebe Tonkin’s character Hayley and how Hayley’s pregnancy with Klaus (Joseph Morgan) affects Elijah. According to Gillies, the first episode will be told from Elijah’s point of view and fans shouldn’t expect Elijah and Klaus’s relationship to be smooth sailing.
“I think they’re going to spend a good deal of the first season trying to rekindle their alliance, to be honest. Klaus is kind of impossible to destroy, but yes. I think that if anything, [Elijah] will be a protector of him from himself.”
Of course, the big question is, will Elijah get a romantic interest? Fans once thought he was gay, which Gillies found rather funny, until the women fans started talking about him and started ‘shipping’ him with several of the characters, Bonnie included.
Elijah has also been linked to Katherine Pierce (also known as Katerina Petrova), in both 1492 and the present time, and is uneasy friends with Elena Gilbert (part of the Petrova doppelgangers). Gillies hopes that Elijah will find someone more than a fling because Elijah’s just “too horny.” What was once fear of playing the character too asexual turned into a “gratifying” experience for the married actor.
In the meantime, Gillies has gone on record as being excited about playing a main character in a series, but that didn’t stop him from making a few quips about the work schedule. He joked about the longer hours and the “rock star” aspect of being in The Vampire Diaries and how that changes now that the story sort of revolves around him.
Gillies said (about the minimal scenes on Diaries), “I come and do my scenes and I go - ‘Oh, I got another stake, oh… but it means I get to see my wife for the next five weeks!’”
