The Winchester Mystery House in San Jose, California is the famous haunted mansion built by Sarah Winchester. The stories say that Sarah Winchester, the widow of William Wirt Winchester, heir to the Winchester rifle fortune, believed that she was haunted by the spirits of all the Native Americans that had fallen victim to the Winchester rifles. She believed that only building a house for the spirits would appease them. Creepy much?
“It wouldn’t be a hotel type of thing, some people just have a fascination with it.” said Kristina Toomians, a member of the city’s Planning Department.
The permit has granted permission for overnight stays in certain structures on the property such as the pump house, caretaker’s residence, and foreman’s quarters. Along with the overnight stays, a liquor licence to sell alcohol on the property was also allowed. An existing cafe has also been transformed into a restaurant. The property is being refashioned into a fully fledged tourist attraction.
Well I’m sure there is nothing that appeases the spirits more than a bunch of boozed up tourists looking for ghosts… I guess we all know what we will be doing next time we’re in California!
