When one of Hollywood’s brightest young stars passes away not only is it a tragic time, but it leaves the world asking questions of why and how such an event could take place. In the case of someone like Heath Ledger, who had starred in such an impressive list of films with gripping characters, it is always interesting to get insight in their process of becoming the character.
In an episode of Too Young To Die, Ledger’s father Kim shares the actor’s journal he kept during the filming of The Dark Knight which he refers to as ‘the Joker’s diary.’ To prepare for the role of the Joker, Ledger isolated himself in a hotel room for a month to create every aspect of the Joker’s being, both physical and mental (hence the journal). Of the process Kim states, “He would do that. He liked to dive into his characters, but this time he really took it up a notch.”
