With The Little Mermaid ’s diamond edition release just around the corner, we have some words from Ariel herself about one of the most memorable songs of the movie.
Jodi Benson talked to Digital Spy about the recording of “Part Of Your World” back in day. She also talked about Carly Rae Jepsen’s cover for the new Blu-ray edition.
Benson said: “When I recorded ‘Part of Your World’ I had Howard Ashman in the studio with me standing at my side, directing me and just guiding me every step of the way. As I sing the song in concert performance, I go back to that day of recording the song. It’s a wonderful, wonderful memory for me”.
The Little Mermaid was the first Disney animated film to receive an Academy Award nomination since The Rescuers in 1977.
The film won two Oscars: best original score and best original song (“Under the Sea”).
Even though “Part of Your World” was overseen by the Academy, Benson is nothing but heart-felt: “We didn’t even have a category for feature animation with the Oscars or Golden Globes - but things have changed, we were the first around. I think if it had cycled back around now it probably would have (been nominated), but a story song at the time was probably not recognised really as much, a monologue song”.
What does Jodi think about Carly Rae Jepsen’s cover?
"I’m honoured. It’s been covered before, and this particular version I really like because instead of a dance song or production or performance, they were able to direct it the way Howard would have liked it - which is a story".
Last but not least, Benson was asked about her other favourite Disney songs: “I really love The Lion King and I really love the music from Tarzan. I think that’s such a great score. Phil Collins is amazing, and of course Elton John”, we absolutely agree!
