One of the biggest questions on TV for the last 8 years was how did Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor) meet his wife. There was loads of speculation over who she could possibly be – Ted’s best friend, Robin; his ex, Victoria; was she even in New York?, and this year, fans met her briefly in the season eight finale.
Cristin Milioti, who landed the role of the character known only as The Mother, met with EW and discussed the audition process: “…I had a Skype meeting with [creators] Craig [Thomas] and Carter [Bays], and we talked for maybe half an hour… Then I was told that I was going to fly to L.A. to test for this role but I still had no idea what it was. They were so secretive, so I had my suspicions. The day I shot [my first scene] it was really on lockdown. All the extras in that train station are producers and writers of the show.”
She describes the mother as having a sense of humour a lot like Ted’s and admits that she never watched the show before she landed the role of The Mother.”‘I lived in one of those lofts with a giant projection screen so we just watched TV on the Internet, and I never had the experience of flipping through the channels” she admits, though she adds, “I watch them every day at breakfast.”
Milioti’s first scene came in the closing seconds of the Season 8 finale of ‘Something New’ where she appeared wither iconic Yellow Umbrella and marks the second role in which the 28 year old New Jersey native played a nameless character: she also portrayed the character, Girl, in the Broadway show, Once.
