'The Returned' Really Close To 'Les Revenants', Yet Miles Away | The Returned

Les Revenants is the one of the latest international television shows to gain fans all around the globe, as The Returned. The French series managed to captivate viewers on a global basis and soon, an American remake was in the works. The United States version, also titled The Returned, has now premiered on A&E and even though it sticks to the original content, the result is not quite as satisfying. For those of you not aware of the plot, both shows revolve around a group of people who come back from the grave, not aged a bit from the day they died, and try to return to their lives as if they were never gone. What made Les Revenants the masterpiece that it is, was the combination of extremely creepy affairs, perfect melancholic performances, dark background sceneries and a haunted atmosphere. The twisted supernatural drama managed to put viewers in just the right mood for events to seem realistic, with its slow pace also playing a key role. The series’ American cousin, The Returned, gets things right by staying close to the source material. Why would anyone want to change a story that good after all? Even though A&E played the cards right on that, the show ultimately fails to be as good as the one it’s based on. Not quite as dramatic as the original, The Returned looks more like your regular U.S. supernatural show, than the remake of a progressive and mind-blowing, moody international show. On both realistic and emotional grounds, something just feels off from the very beginning, as if the tone for the spectacle of Les Revenants is never set. It’s true that a great job has been done as far as the cast is concerned, but still the way the characters are portrayed is not as captivating. There is no denying that The Returned will serve as a great joint for the ones who can’t stand watching the original show in French, with subtitles. To be honest though, those will be the ones missing out, as Les Revenants is one hell of a compelling supernatural extravaganza with extraordinary emotional appeal. The Americanised remake is far from that, for the time being at least, even though the ones not familiar with its source could still find it enjoyable. The very first, 10-episode season of The Returned premiered on March 9 and airs Mondays at 10 PM, on A&E. Les Revenants is scheduled to come back with its second season this fall on Canal+, Sundance and lots of other networks worldwide.
