Saying goodbye to a beloved television character is never easy, and when it is one of the most loved characters from one of the most iconic television shows of all-time, farewells are very bittersweet indeed. In Sunday’s episode of The Simpsons, in an episode entitled “The Man Who Grew Too Much,” Edna Krabappel was officially retired from the show. This is after her voice actress, Marcia Wallace, sadly passed away in October of last year. She had recorded lines for a few more episodes just before her sad passing. In the episode, the final scene shows Ned Flanders and Mrs. Krabappel (who got married in Season 23) at a tango performance. Edna speaks, which ends with her trademark laugh, and then the scene zooms out to Ned Flanders alone, sitting on his sofa wearing a black armband (which signifies mourning), and he calmly states “I sure do miss that laugh” and Nelson appears at the window and says he misses her, too. Edna’s picture sits alongside Ned’s first wife, Maude, who died in Season 11. It is unknown as to which character will replace Edna as the 4th grade teacher, but we can rest assured The Simpsons’ writers will find a suitable replacement for such an iconic character, voiced by a true legend who left us far too soon.
