For four seasons, fans of The Vampire Diaries were under the impression that there was only one line of doppelgangers – the Petrova line. For those of you who don’t know what a doppelganger is, it is best described as a paranormal double or look-a-like. In the TVD universe, Elena Gilbert is a doppelganger of Katherine Pierce.
During “Graduation”, the season 4 finale of The Vampire Diaries, the gang graduated, Elena chose Damon over Stefan, and Stefan was revealed to be a doppelganger of the original immortal, Silas. Stefan was thrown into a box into the sea, while Silas became free.
According to producer Caroline Dries, season 5 is going to focus of the origin of the doppelganger.
"[In season five], we’re going to explore this phenomenon of the doppelganger and how and why they exist in our mythology and what they actually mean for Stefan and Elena (Nina Dobrev) and everyone else."
For the Petrova line of doppelgangers, Katherine and Elena are the only 2 descendants from Tatia, the original doppelganger, whereas Stefan is the only known doppelganger of Silas.
Dries also went on to commend Paul Wesley on his acting implying that he was a good choice to explore the doppelgänger mythology. “He is such an awesome actor, that we were like… how can we see more levels with him?”
It was a learning experience for everyone when they found out Elena was a doppelgänger in the first season, I can only imagine how everyone will react when they find out Stefan is part of another doppelgänger line.
The Vampire Diaries will return with its season 5 premiere on October 10th.
