The Whispers: 01x07, Whatever It Takes | The Whispers

Sean is debriefing the people of The War Room about his encounter with Drill's rock o' doom. He tells everyone, including the president, that Drill is there to destroy everyone. The Sec of Defense and Wes realize that Drill can only be in one place at one time, is exclusively friends with kids and travels via power sources. In the car, a child hears Drill through the power lines, clearly getting directions from the orb o' doom himself. She gets a hold of her mother's phone while holding a death grip on an incredibly creepy doll. Hello, foreshadowing. Wes and Sean butt heads: the electric dead zone surrounding Drill's rock o' doom is a joke, blow it up; no, the rock can teach us things, we need this to our advantage. The President wants to visit the rock. Meanwhile, the President's wife and daughter, the two that were in the car, arrive home to the White House... and the creepy doll just so happens to be hidden under the seat in the car. Oh, buddy.

Sean wants to go home but the Sec of Defense basically wants, nay, forces him to be a guinea pig. Civic duty and all that jazz, let us probe you or you go to prison. The president meets Wes at the rock o' doom, citing the constitution and how this colossal decision on what to do with it is difficult. Wes is by your side, bro. “Protect this rock. That's my decision.” Claire tells her mom that things are rough with Sean, but she's trying her best. Sean arrives home and Henry is more excited to see him than Santa Claus. Clearly there is still a very rough, tangible tension between Sean and Claire but they put it aside for Henry. He shows his dad around the house, all the photos and trinkets of the things that they did while Sean was gone. The president hops in his car and just so happens to find the doll she left behind, telling Wes it's from a TV show that she loves. He tells Wes to go home, be with his family because that's the most important thing there is. At the house, Lena and Minx are sitting under the pergola of my dreams, which has what seems like a million lights stringed around it. Lena is asking Drill questions and he's lighting the place up like a friggin' Christmas tree. It seems as if Lena can understand him, asking questions without Minx translating. Wes gets outside and Drill disappears... I wonder if Lena will tell him about her new electrical amigo.

Sean and Claire have a moment alone in the living room, marveling at the fact that their son can hear once again. He then shuts her down, saying he hasn't really had a good sleep in months (THANKS, DRILL), which is also a pretty solid sign that things are going to be rocky for a while. He sleeps on the couch downstairs; she's in the bedroom upstairs. Wes calls her and she explains that everything is alright as it can be. Wes is going to get in the middle of things... he really needs to get out of the middle of their relationship. Sean takes a moment on the couch downstairs and searches “Dynamic electromagnetic field” on Claire's tablet. He won't be going anywhere anytime soon – he's rocking a home arrest anklet. The president's wife puts her child to bed, but obviously things are about to go wrong. The girl gets out of bed, goes to her electrified closet and disappears into it. Sean whips up blueberry pancakes for Henry and takes the time to ask him a few things about Drill. He has a new mission that he needs help on; Sean's leaving again, so please look after your mother. Henry makes him promise that he'll come back, to which Henry delivers a gut-punch, “I don't believe you.”

Sean leaves and Claire wants answers; he explains his guinea pig status. Wes explains to Lena that things have been discovered about Drill and that it's in their best interest to keep Drill away from their daughter. I'm starting to wonder what exactly Drill said to Lena because she seems a little more bold and a little less worried about what is going on. Are they in cahoots now? The scientist has all sorts of wires linked up to Sean. She wants answers as she's spent most of her life trying to figure out the universe and all it's mysteries. He laughs at her; Drill views humans as ants, and he's got just the right amount of bug spray coming our way. Don't study him, destroy him – but she doesn't seem convinced.

Claire rips Wes a new asshole about using Sean as an experiment, even though it wasn't entire his idea or fault. He uses her emotions, saying that she was willing to use the Drill children as guinea pigs, in an experiment that clearly went wrong, so suck it up about Sean. She asks to see him, as she's had less than 24 hours with him, and he agrees to do what he can to get her into the building. The scientist and Sean are having a battle of the egos, but he points out something critical that she can't get to: what he saw in the blue light. “You brought me here to learn from me, doctor... so learn from me. Ask me what I saw.” Claire gets into a car with Rollins and he hands her a FBI tactical vest, which she explains is protection against Drill. As soon as he pulls away, she turns into Martha Stewart and rips the vest apart, putting various wires, pliers and tape into the now empty vest. Rollins watches her from a distance... Minx is watching a show as her father goes to leave for work. On the show, there is a doll that the president's daughter had as Minx explains that “He's Justice, he's the best. Everybody watches this show. He knows how to talk to kids.” As a person who has a completely rational fear of dolls in any form, this is not helping me sleep at night. Outside, Lena is talking to her pergola, assuming Drill is zapping around in the lights, telling him to leave Minx alone. Once she realized that Drill is not there, she asks Minx to summon him. He's with a new, important friend now. Sean had visions once he had his interaction with the rock o' doom. He saw his empty house, an empty playground and then an empty school. There will still remnants that life had just left those areas though, as if people disappeared in the middle of what they were doing. Is Drill going to rapture everyone!?

Wes is speaking with Lena when he realizes that the Justice doll is bad news. Rushing to the white house, he finds the doll hidden under the daughter's pillow. Just as she starts to freak out, the closet door starts to vibrate violently. Wes opens it to find a little red car vibrating off the shelf; the mother's phone is inside of it. Drill used the phone to track where the rock o' doom is... crafty bastard. He needs to find the rock to “call home.” Yeah, super... he's calling for backup.

Claire shows up to visit Sean with her FBI vest on, just as Wes rings her up to warn her that Drill knows where the rock o' doom is. Rollins calls the Sec of Defense to tattle on Claire about the vest, and he knows where she's headed. That's bad news if I've ever heard it. The scientist is finally coming around to the idea that the rock o' doom must go boom. Sean says they must reverse the electromagnetic field around the rock to disable the shield, which will give a small window for Drill to enter and then be trapped. This can't go wrong, right? Wrong. Just as Claire, Sean and the scientist start to disengage the magnets to keep Drill out... he shows up. And as expected, the military also shows up, making it an official party. Sean and Claire are slammed to the ground as the scientists takes a bold move to disable the last magnet... getting shot in the process. Seriously, asshat, you shoot the SCIENTIST?! Wes arrives to try and take control of the situation, which is disintegrating rapidly. Drill is free to enter his rocky cell phone, and he does. Someone must blow up the rock 'o doom, and who else but the man who knows Drill best: Sean. Claire loses her mind at the thought of losing her husband again, with Wes dragging her off to safety. Sean pushes the button and Drill is imploded within his rocky cell phone.

Out in the carnage, Claire is looking for a sign of hope... and she gets it, hearing Sean call out her name. How the hell did he survive?! Wes puts his hand out and Sean shakes it; are the men reconciling over the cheating scandal or merely saying 'good job' because Drill is gone?

The police sirens wail in the distance, and Wes gives the Bennigans his car keys, telling them to run like the wind until he can calm the situation down. Man, Wes is about to step in a giant pile of crap. Rollins is outside of the Bennigan house, speaking on the phone with someone. “I'm here, I’m at the house sir. I'd like to know what I’m doing here.” “You’re there to pick up the kid.” “I’m sorry sir, I don't follow.” “I believe my orders are loud and clear: Bennigan's son, I want him in our custody.” Lena wakes up from a dead sleep to find Minx standing beside her bed like one of the damn twins from The Shining... again. Drill's here. If you want something from him, he'll want something from you. “Maybe you can make a deal.”
