New Documents Reveal How Controversial Killer Whale Tilikum Ended Up At SeaWorld

More than four years after the death of trainer Dawn Brancheau, documents have been released to prove why SeaWorld was allowed to bring Tilikum to Orlando.

More than four years after the death of Dawn Brancheau, caused by the killer whale Tilikum, documents have been released to prove why SeaWorld was allowed to bring Tilikum to Orlando.

Video and documents from 1991 have been recently obtained, showing SeaWorld executives arguing that they were prepared to take Tilikum.

Just a few months before Tilikum’s arrival in SeaWorld, he had killed his trainer at the Canadian park, Sealand. The trainer had fallen into the pool and Tilikum pulled her to the bottom, where she ultimately drowned.

In the video, SeaWorld explains why they want to bring Tilikum to Orlando:

The problems with Tilikum staying in the medical pool may be serious. The medical pool is 31 feet long 23 feet wide and 12 feet deep. Tilikum is 20 feet long. Tilikum’s stay in the medical pool severely restricts his ability to exercise since the pool is only slightly larger than the whale itself.

They were arguing that SeaWorld was prepared to take the killer whale, who lives up to his name.

SeaWorld’s animals are all highly trained and are accustomed to interacting with trainers. Sealand’s animals are essentially untrained.

Brancheau was killed in 2010.
