In what has come as no surprise to many, Olympian Tom Daley has taken to YouTube to reveal that he is in a gay relationship.

The Team GB diving champion and Splash! star’s sexuality has long been speculated about. As recently as the beginning of September this year when he was voted the world’s sexiest man by iconic gay magazine Attitude, he insisted that he wasn’t gay. He followed the statement up by saying, “But even if I was, I wouldn’t be ashamed. It wouldn’t bother me in the slightest what people thought”. However, he alludes to the reports in the video saying that he was “misquoted”.

In the video that was posted today, Daley said that his life “changed massively” this past spring when he met his partner. He proceeds to describe his partner saying, “They make me feel so happy, so safe and everything just feels great.” Before adding, “[And] that someone is a guy”.

He then goes on to explain his feelings, “It did take me by surprise a little bit. It was always in the back of my head that something like that could happen, but it wasn’t until spring this year that something just clicked. It felt right.”

While he insists that he “still fancies girls”, he says that he “couldn’t be happier” with his current relationship.

He also discusses his decision to go public about his relationship and to do this via YouTube. His reasoning was that, “I didn’t want to get my words twisted. I wanted to put an end to all the rumors, the speculation [and] just say it.”

While he admits that some of his relatives “had mixed opinions” on his sexuality and had “wanted [him] to keep it quiet”, on the whole he has found that his closest friends and family have been “so supportive” of his coming out and his new relationship.

He also mentioned his late father, Robert, who succumbed to brain cancer in 2011 saying that he believes that he would be proud of him and that “[h]e always said to me, ‘As long as you’re happy, I’m happy’.”

ITV, producers of Splash!, released a statement saying they are “looking forward to Tom’s return to Splash! next year”. They also declined to comment further as it is “clearly a personal matter”.

Daley alludes to this saying, “People are going to make a big deal of this. Is it a big deal? I don’t think is. But I wanted to say something and I feel like now I’m ready and I wanted to do it”.

He concluded the almost 5 and a half minute video with “’I’m still Tom, I still want to win a gold medal in Rio 2016 for Great Britain. I’m still as motivated as ever to do that. And it would be great to have you guys on that journey too.

“But I just wanted to make sure that I got to tell you guys before I head off to Houston for a training camp that I’ve got up until Christmas.

“But I’m glad I’ve got it off my chest and I hope you can join me on my journey to Rio 2016 too.”
