In 2009, the cargo ship Maersk Alabama was on its way to Mombasa, Kenya, carrying 17,000 metric tons of cargo. There were twenty people on board. All had received anti-piracy training though there hadn’t been a piracy seizure of an American registered ship since the 19th century.

Their captain was Captain Richard Phillips and they were sized by Somali pirates on April 8th, 2009.

Captain Phillips tells the heroic true story of Capt. Phillips and his crew and what they went through during their five-day ordeal. Tom Hanks stars in the biopic as the honourable Captain, and Catherine Keener co-stars as his wife.

The trailer opens with snippets of the start of the day on both sides. Phillips heads in to work and the pirates take to the water before it surges into a suspenseful weave of the pirates taking the ship and the lengths Phillips goes through to protect his crew which includes the building of an uneasy relationship with the Somali commanding officer (Barkhad Abdi).

It looks like another fine vehicle to showcase Tom Hanks’ brilliant range as an actor. It also marks Paul Greengrass’s first movie since 2010. The film is set to be released in both the US and the UK on October 11th.
