Director Ben Wheatley announced  today via Twitter that Tom Hiddleston has been confirmed for the lead role in Wheatley’s adaptation of J.G. Ballard’s novel High-Rise.  Wheatley is known for his films Kill List, Sightseers, and A Field in England. The last of these was released in the UK in 2013, and is set to be released in the US on February 7th.  Wheatley has recently directed the first two episodes of Doctor Who that will star Peter Capaldi as the new Doctor. Amy Jump, who has worked with Wheatley on his previous three films, has penned the adaptation of High-Rise.  The novel takes place in a luxury high-rise building.  Minor power failures quickly affect the lifestyle of the tenants, who soon divide themselves into three classes: lower, middle, and upper.  The classes combat each other and defend their ‘territories’.  Some tenants enjoy the lack of social obligation and indulge in perverse desires.  Akin to other works by Ballard (Concrete Island and Crash – which was adapted for the screen in 1997 by David Cronenberg) he examines how modern technology warps the human psyche. Tom Hiddleston will be playing the part of Robert Laing, a young doctor seduced by the high-rise’s architect, Anthony Royal, into living in the building.  Wheatley said , “I am very excited to be working with Tom Hiddleston on this project…  He brings an intelligence, vulnerability, and humour to his roles, be they art-house or blockbuster that will make Laing come alive.” Hiddleston added, “I can’t wait to work with Ben.  He is one of the most inspired directors in the UK, and he brings impeccable taste, courage, wit, and singular brilliance: the perfect combination to realize the ambition of J.G. Ballard’s unique vision.” Hiddleston is currently starring in Coriolanus at the Donmar Playhouse in the West End.  His next stop: Canada, where he will star in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson PeakHigh-Rise is set to begin filming in June of 2014.
