It looks like Spider-Man: Homecoming star Tom Holland is in it for the long haul.
In a Facebook interview with French media outlet Allocine, Holland accidentally let it slip that there will be an all new Spider-Man trilogy! "There is still a lot of room for Peter Parker, and Spider-Man especially, to grow in the next two movies," he said.
"He's definitely not the finished article by the end of Spider-Man: Homecoming, and I really look forward to exploring the different ways he can grow up and go through puberty, I guess. It's going to be an exciting couple of movies."
And just to hone the point, he stated "Yeah, there'll be Spider-Man 2 and 3 (but) it won't be Homecoming 2 and 3."
Sony has not confirmed a third movie, but it has previously announced that Spider-Man: Homecoming will be getting a sequel. It is not really surprising since the studio will be obviously keen on developing its own superhero franchise.
Tom Holland made his debut as the web slinger in Marvel's Captain America: Civil War to rave reviews. It went on to earn $1.1 billion worldwide to become 2016's highest grossing film. But that was a Disney production and was part of a deal that allowed Marvel to borrow the character, enabling a shared universe between studios.
Now it is Sony's turn to bring out their own film with Spider-Man: Homecoming, and they are hoping that they can replicate that success. A lot is riding in on this; after all, this will be the first film of an all new -- albeit, still connected -- franchise, and Holland, for all intents and purposes, is still untested as a solo star, and he has to be the one to carry this through.
In addition to the trilogy, Spider-Man is already set to appear in the massive hero gathering that is Avengers: Infinity War Part 1. With that and Civil War, Tom Holland is set to surpass Toby Maguire of the original Sam Raimi trilogy in being the actor that has portrayed Spider-Man the most on the big screen.
That is a lot of pressure for a young actor, but, then again, Tom Holland is really talented, and I am looking forward to his future roles within and outside the Spider-Man franchise.
Spider-Man: Homecoming is set for a July 5 release in the UK and other selected territories and on July 7 in the US.
